Tyler Hoechlin might have been born on September 11, 1987, but he’s been playing heroes, heartthrobs, and handsome troublemakers for most of his life. He started acting at just 11 years old, and by 14 he was starring opposite Tom Hanks in the critically acclaimed Road to Perdition. Imagine being a teenager and having Tom Hanks as your on-screen dad — that’s one heck of a first résumé line.

After that early success, Tyler spent years building a career that would make both Hollywood casting directors and comic book fans very happy. He played Martin Brewer, the baseball-loving boyfriend on 7th Heaven, before taking on the role that would change his life: Derek Hale in Teen Wolf. Derek was dark, brooding, and always looked like he had just stepped out of a fitness magazine — probably because Tyler actually did. His portrayal of the tortured werewolf became a fan favorite, and he quickly rose to supernatural TV royalty status.

But Tyler wasn’t done leveling up. In 2016, he stepped into one of the most iconic superhero suits of all time as Superman in The CW’s Supergirl, eventually becoming the star of Superman & Lois. His take on the Man of Steel was a fresh one: he gave us a Clark Kent who was charming and relatable, a Superman who smiled, and a dad who somehow balances raising super-powered twins with saving the world. Fans praised him for bringing heart, humor, and a very impressive jawline to the cape.

Outside of his superhero duties, Tyler has flexed his comedy muscles in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, where he played a charismatic baseball team captain in 1980 — and reminded us that yes, he was almost a professional baseball player in real life. He turned down a spot in the MLB draft to focus on acting, which worked out well for everyone (except maybe the poor pitchers who would’ve had to face him).

Tyler is also known for being one of the most down-to-earth guys in Hollywood. Fans frequently share stories of meeting him at conventions, where he’s just as warm and genuine as you’d hope Superman would be. He’s also a fitness enthusiast, a dog lover, and the kind of guy who could probably help you move your couch and then crack a joke while doing it.

Tyler Hoechlin’s career is proof that you can be an action hero, a romantic lead, and the nicest guy in the room all at once. On his birthday, we celebrate the man who went from teen star to werewolf heartthrob to the most relatable Superman yet — and we raise a glass to a guy who somehow makes saving the world look effortless.

Happy Birthday, Tyler Hoechlin!
