Kohl Sudduth is best known for playing Officer Luther “Suitcase” Simpson in the Jesse Stone TV movie series alongside Tom Selleck. Over nine installments, he became a reliable fan favorite—part trusted sidekick, part comic relief, and all-around good guy with a badge and a big heart.

A native of Granville, Ohio, Sudduth studied at Ohio University before moving to New York City to pursue acting. He started on the stage and paid his dues in smaller roles before landing a breakout part in Bowfinger (1999), the Steve Martin-Eddie Murphy satire about low-budget filmmaking. His deadpan delivery and solid timing stood out, earning him more roles in both TV and film.

But it was the Jesse Stone franchise that gave Sudduth a place in living rooms across America. As “Suitcase,” the wide-eyed, eager, and sometimes adorably naïve deputy to Selleck’s grizzled, world-weary police chief, Sudduth brought warmth and levity to the series’ darker themes. Over time, his character grew in confidence and depth, and his on-screen chemistry with Selleck became one of the franchise’s emotional anchors.

Outside of Jesse Stone, Sudduth has appeared in episodes of CSI: Miami, Law & Order, Grosse Pointe, and The Sopranos, showcasing his range across crime dramas and comedies alike.

Kohl Sudduth may not seek the spotlight, but when he’s on screen, he makes you feel like you’re in good hands. As he celebrates another trip around the sun, we salute a career built on sincerity, subtlety, and just enough sarcasm.

Happy Birthday to Kohl Sudduth—dependable, underrated, and forever our favorite small-town deputy.
