A Celebration of Our Feline Overlords
October 16th marks Global Cat Day, a day to celebrate our whiskered companions who, let’s be honest, probably run the world from their cozy nooks and high perches. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about the welfare of cats, especially feral and stray ones, and encouraging people to support programs that protect and care for these independent creatures. But, of course, no day about cats would be complete without a little humor—because cats seem to find the funniest (and often most inconvenient) ways to make themselves the center of attention.
From Ferals to Famous
Alley Cat Allies launched Global Cat Day, an organization focused on protecting the lives and rights of cats, particularly feral cats, which live outdoors and are typically not socialized to humans. These cats aren’t the ones you’ll find lounging in your lap; they’re more likely to be dodging cars, leaping over fences, and staring judgmentally from the shadows. While they might not have Instagram accounts like some of their more photogenic indoor cousins, they still deserve care and protection. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs are often highlighted on this day, as they help manage feral populations in humane ways.
Fun fact: Cats have been revered in some cultures for centuries, especially in ancient Egypt, where they were considered sacred animals. That regal lineage might explain why your cat looks at you like you’re unworthy of its presence, even when you’re holding a can of its favorite tuna.
Why Cats Are Basically Running the Show
It’s no secret that cats have perfected the art of nonchalant superiority. From lounging in the sun to ignoring your every call (unless, of course, food is involved), they’ve cultivated an air of mystery and majesty. Their personalities range from aloof aristocrats to hyperactive fuzzballs. Yet, whether they’re tearing through your living room at 3 a.m. or silently judging your life choices from a windowsill, cats have a way of getting us wrapped around their little paws.
Just imagine this: You’re on a Zoom call for work, delivering an important presentation, and—bam!—a cat’s fluffy tail appears on screen. Suddenly, the meeting is no longer about sales projections but about Mr. Whiskers and whether or not he’s plotting world domination (he is).
The ancient Egyptians may have worshiped cats, but modern society isn’t too far behind. Cats are the undisputed rulers of social media. From memes to viral videos, they dominate the internet with their nonchalance and ninja-like reflexes. We have no choice but to follow along, offering adoration in the form of likes, shares, and comments. It’s just the way of the world.
The Mysterious Life of the Feral Cat
While we may know the eccentricities of our indoor cats (the random sprinting, the love of cardboard boxes, the need to knock things off tables), feral cats live a more adventurous, and often precarious, life. These are the cats you rarely see but often hear—yowling in the night, darting through alleys, and occasionally having standoffs with local wildlife.
Feral cats aren’t your typical house pets. They’re independent, resourceful, and operate on their own schedule. Much like that one friend who always "forgets" to reply to texts but still shows up when they need something, feral cats live by their own rules. And if they were human, you can bet they’d be the kind that leaves you on read.
Organizations like Alley Cat Allies advocate for the humane treatment of feral cats through Trap-Neuter-Return programs. This process involves humanely trapping the cats, getting them spayed or neutered, and then releasing them back into their outdoor homes. It helps control the feral population while allowing the cats to live their best, most independent lives—free from the unwanted pressures of parenthood, which, let’s face it, is probably something most cats would scoff at.
How to Celebrate Global Cat Day (Without Becoming a Cat Butler)
Let’s face it—every day feels like Global Cat Day if you share your home with a cat. Whether it’s feeding them on demand, providing them with countless comfy spots to nap, or obligingly rubbing their bellies (until they decide they’ve had enough and claw the truce off the table), you’re already playing your part in feline worship.
But here are a few ways to celebrate that go beyond the usual pampering:
-
Support your local shelters and TNR programs. Many shelters rely on donations to care for stray and feral cats. Helping out doesn’t mean you have to adopt 17 more cats (although no judgment if you do). It could mean donating supplies or funds to a local organization or volunteering your time.
-
Advocate for feral cats. Educate your community about the benefits of TNR programs. If there are feral cats in your area, find out if there are initiatives to help humanely manage their population.
-
Spoil your own cat (or cats). Don’t worry, we won’t tell if this is your favorite part of the day. Cats can always use an extra treat, a new toy, or, if they’re fancy like that, a fresh box to sit in (because as every cat owner knows, the more expensive the bed, the more likely the cat is to ignore it in favor of a random Amazon box).
On Global Cat Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the full spectrum of cat-ness: from the pampered house cats who rule our homes, to the feral felines who roam the streets with that same unapologetic independence. Whether they’re curling up in your lap, swatting at imaginary foes, or making you question why you bought that expensive scratching post when the couch was clearly better, cats enrich our lives in so many ways. Even when they’re knocking your favorite mug off the counter.
As any cat would tell you—if they bothered to speak—humans are just here to serve. And honestly, we’re okay with that.
