Sofia Carson was born Sofía Daccarett Char on April 10, 1993, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She grew up in a Colombian-American family and speaks both English and Spanish fluently. Her parents encouraged her interest in the arts from an early age, and Carson quickly developed a love for music, dance, and acting.
She attended St. Hugh School and later Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami before pursuing higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While studying communications at UCLA, Carson also trained extensively in music, voice, and performance, preparing herself for a career in entertainment.
Carson’s early acting career began with small television appearances. One of her first roles was a guest spot on the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally in 2014. While the role was brief, it helped introduce her to Disney audiences and opened the door to much larger opportunities.
Her breakthrough arrived in 2015 when she was cast as Evie in the Disney Channel original movie Descendants. The film imagined a world where the teenage children of famous Disney villains attend school together, and Carson’s character—Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen from Snow White—quickly became a fan favorite.
Descendants was a major success for Disney, and Carson reprised the role of Evie in Descendants 2 (2017) and Descendants 3 (2019). Across the trilogy, her character evolved from a stylish but uncertain teenager into a confident leader among the group of villain kids. The franchise also allowed Carson to showcase her musical abilities, as the films featured numerous musical numbers.
In addition to acting, Carson launched a successful music career. She signed with Hollywood Records and released several singles that combined pop, dance, and electronic influences. Her music includes songs such as “Love Is the Name,” “Back to Beautiful,” and “Come Back Home,” the latter of which gained renewed popularity through the Netflix film Purple Hearts.
Carson has also built an impressive film résumé outside of Disney productions. She starred in the 2022 Netflix film Purple Hearts, where she played Cassie Salazar, an aspiring singer who enters into a marriage of convenience with a U.S. Marine. The film became one of Netflix’s most-watched releases that year, and Carson received praise not only for her acting but also for her musical contributions to the soundtrack.
Throughout her career, Carson has balanced acting and music while also taking on roles behind the scenes. For Purple Hearts, she served as an executive producer, demonstrating a growing interest in shaping projects creatively as well as performing in them.
Carson is also involved in philanthropy and humanitarian work. She has served as a global ambassador for organizations such as UNICEF, helping promote educational initiatives and youth empowerment programs around the world.
Her bilingual background and international perspective have made her a popular figure among global audiences. Carson frequently highlights her Colombian heritage and has spoken about the importance of representation in entertainment.
In an industry where many performers struggle to transition between music and acting, Sofia Carson has managed to succeed at both. Whether she’s performing on stage, starring in a film, or recording a new song, she continues to expand her career across multiple areas of entertainment.
And if Hollywood keeps giving her more opportunities, she’ll probably just keep adding talents to the list. Acting? Check. Singing? Check. Producing? Check. At this rate, directing, writing, and maybe piloting the studio helicopter might be next.
