Isaac William Hempstead Wright was born on April 9, 1999, in Surrey, England. Unlike many actors who grow up dreaming of Hollywood stardom, Wright’s path into acting was almost accidental. As a child, he joined a local acting class mainly as a way to avoid playing soccer in the cold British weather. That small decision would soon lead to one of the most recognizable roles in television history.
In 2010, at just eleven years old, Wright auditioned for a new fantasy television series being developed by HBO. The show was based on George R. R. Martin’s popular A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Wright was cast as Bran Stark, the youngest son of the noble Stark family of Winterfell.
When Game of Thrones premiered in 2011, it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The series was praised for its complex storytelling, dramatic twists, and massive scale. Wright’s character began the story as a curious young boy who loved climbing castle walls. Early in the series, however, Bran suffers a life-changing fall that leaves him unable to walk. From that moment on, his storyline becomes one of the most mysterious and magical threads in the series.
Over the course of eight seasons, Wright’s character evolves dramatically. Bran develops supernatural abilities, including visions of the past and the power to connect with animals and people through mystical means. Eventually, his character becomes known as the “Three-Eyed Raven,” a keeper of ancient knowledge and history.
By the end of the series in 2019, Bran’s journey leads to one of the most surprising outcomes in the show’s story, placing him in a position of leadership over the fictional kingdom of Westeros. Wright’s portrayal of the quiet, thoughtful character earned him recognition from fans and critics alike.
While Game of Thrones remains Wright’s most famous role, he has appeared in other projects as well. One of his early film roles came in the animated fantasy movie The Boxtrolls (2014), where he provided the voice for the character Eggs. The film was well received and even earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Wright has also appeared in films such as Closed Circuit (2013), a legal thriller starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall. Though smaller in scale than his television work, these projects helped him broaden his experience as an actor.
Interestingly, Wright has shown strong academic interests alongside his acting career. For a time, he considered stepping away from acting in order to study neuroscience at university. While he ultimately chose to continue acting, his interest in science reflects a thoughtful and curious personality that mirrors some aspects of his famous on-screen character.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Wright has continued exploring both acting opportunities and academic pursuits. Like many actors who start their careers young, he has taken a careful and deliberate approach to choosing projects that interest him.
Despite achieving worldwide fame before the age of twenty, Wright has maintained a relatively low-key public life. Fans continue to recognize him as Bran Stark, the character whose quiet presence gradually shaped the destiny of an entire fictional world.
And considering he started acting simply to stay warm indoors during winter, that’s quite an unexpected journey.
