Jennifer Coolidge was born on August 28, 1961, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Norwell. She attended Emerson College in Boston, where she studied theater, and later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Interestingly, Coolidge did not originally imagine herself becoming one of Hollywood's most recognizable comic actresses. She was interested in dramatic acting and has spoken about admiring performers such as Meryl Streep. Somewhere along the road, however, comedy discovered that Jennifer Coolidge was far too useful to be allowed to spend her career looking solemnly through rain-covered windows. After moving to New York, Coolidge became involved with the Gotham City Improv group before heading west to Los Angeles. In Christopher Guest's Best in Show in 2000, she played Sherri Ann Cabot, the much younger wife of a wealthy elderly man and owner of a prize-winning poodle. Paulette could easily have been little more than comic decoration, but Coolidge gave her considerable warmth beneath the eccentricity. She played Fiona, the gloriously unpleasant stepmother in A Cinderella Story, appeared in Zoolander, Pootie Tang, Click, Date Movie and Epic Movie, and provided voices for animated productions including Robots. She also continued appearing regularly on television, with credits including Frasier, Sex and the City, Friends, Nip/Tuck, Glee, Party Down and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. One of her larger television roles came in Joey, the Friends spin-off starring Matt LeBlanc. Coolidge played Bobbie Morganstern, Joey's flamboyant and aggressive agent. She later became familiar to another generation of television viewers as Sophie Kachinsky on 2 Broke Girls, the extremely confident Polish neighbor whose entrances seldom suggested she was hoping to pass unnoticed. Despite decades of steady employment and an impressive collection of recognizable characters, Coolidge experienced an extraordinary career resurgence in her sixties. The role responsible was Tanya McQuoid in Mike White's HBO series The White Lotus. White had Coolidge specifically in mind for Tanya, a wealthy, emotionally needy traveler who arrives at an expensive Hawaiian resort carrying her mother's ashes and enough personal baggage to require its own luggage carousel. Tanya was funny, frustrating, vulnerable, selfish, lonely and strangely lovable, often within the same scene. Coolidge's performance demonstrated something audiences familiar with her comedy had perhaps overlooked: underneath the peculiar voices and impeccable timing was a formidable dramatic actress. Coolidge returned as Tanya for the second season of The White Lotus, this time set in Sicily. Her performance again combined broad comedy with genuine sadness, turning Tanya into the character most closely associated with the early seasons of the series. After spending much of her career as the supporting actress audiences remembered even when they forgot the rest of the cast, Coolidge suddenly found herself receiving some of television's highest honors. The Television Academy awarded Coolidge the 2022 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the first season of The White Lotus. She followed that with another Emmy, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the show's second season. She also won the 2023 Golden Globe for her performance as Tanya. The awards represented a remarkable late-career transformation, but calling Coolidge an overnight success would require ignoring roughly three decades of work. She had already built an extensive career and created several characters embedded firmly in popular culture. What The White Lotus changed was the industry's perception of what she could do when given enough room. Coolidge has continued working in both film and television, including appearances in Promising Young Woman, Single All the Way, Shotgun Wedding and A Minecraft Movie. Her renewed popularity has also made her something of a cultural personality beyond individual roles, helped considerably by awards speeches and interviews that can be as unpredictable as her characters. Her career is unusual because it never followed the conventional Hollywood route from young star to established veteran. Coolidge instead spent years building a collection of supporting characters until audiences eventually realized that the woman supposedly standing off to the side was frequently the person they had come to see.
