On October 1, 1962, Johnny Carson made his debut as the permanent host of NBC's The Tonight Show, succeeding Jack Paar and beginning a remarkable 30-year run that would make him one of American television's most influential entertainers. Carson, a Nebraska-raised Navy veteran who had worked in radio, television and game shows, had previously filled in for Paar before receiving the job permanently. The program remained based in New York until 1972, when Carson moved it to Burbank, California, helping shift the center of late-night television toward Hollywood.

Introduced each evening by Ed McMahon's booming "Heeere's Johnny!", Carson became famous for his conversational delivery, topical opening monologues and ability to recover from jokes that fell spectacularly flat. Alongside McMahon and longtime bandleader Doc Severinsen, he performed comedy sketches and created recurring characters including the mysterious Carnac the Magnificent. The interview desk was equally important: movie stars, musicians, athletes, politicians, comedians and occasionally unpredictable animals all found themselves sitting beside Carson. For entertainers, particularly young comedians, a successful appearance on The Tonight Show could provide an enormous career boost.

Carson hosted his final Tonight Show on May 22, 1992, bringing an extraordinary 30-year television career to a close before largely withdrawing from public life. Jay Leno succeeded him as host. Carson died in 2005, but the late-night format he helped define—opening monologue, desk comedy, celebrity interviews and musical or comedy guests—remains immediately recognizable decades later. Generations of hosts have occupied late-night desks since, but Carson's three decades behind his made "Johnny" almost synonymous with The Tonight Show.
